How to give a gift in Hong Kong

So, as I mentioned in "How to catch a flight to Hong Kong," my parents are proper Chinese (Taiwanese) parents who gave me a proper Chinese upbringing, and didn't neglect to send me along to HK with plenty of gifts to bestow on friends, sundry adults, and other TBA people who showed me kindness. I had plenty of Costco goodies: bottles of Centrum, supplemented with some packets of dried fruit.

On my very first day in HK, when I arrived at my friend's flat and was chilling with Julita, I walked around the flat and stepped into the kitchen.

I stopped dead in my tracks.

Right there, on the counter, was a bowl full of packets of Costco brand dried fruit and snacks. Including the very one I was planning to give this family, Sunsweet Antioxidant Blend.

"Goddamn!" I exclaimed.

Julita poked her head around the corner. "Something wrong?"

"No..sorry..just..yeah," I muttered. "Nothing."

They had stolen my thunder, and they didn't even know it.

*The first pic is of their kitchen counter, and the second pic is of the package I was going to give them, which I ended up putting in my desk drawer at work in case I get hungry, or maybe I will share with some colleagues I like.
