Perrine had told me this, and I had said “Mm-hmm” and smiled politely, but I didn’t really understand until coming here and experiencing it first-hand.
The social life, and most aspects of life, really, are very stratified in Hong Kong. The set of businessmen and certain families belong to clubs which have nice restaurants and facilities, often in expensive properties with nice views. They seem to all know each other.
Luckily I have some friends in the right places. So far I’ve eaten at four of these clubs. They're really nice, and so are the people I've been meeting in these clubs. The food is *awesome*. The people are hospitable and have shown me a good time, for which I'm very grateful.
Nightclubs and bars are a similar story. You have to be on a “list,” or be in a party that bought a table, or the bouncer has to know you. And how would the bouncer know you unless you were already a frequenter of the club?
And how would you frequent the club if you weren’t already wealthy or well-connected?
Luckily I have some friends in the right places. If I didn’t, I wouldn't really know about this side of Hong Kong at all.
PS: if you didn't go to my alma mater, a final club is like a secret society or old boys' club
