Hostel: Part II

After 2 days I couldn’t take it anymore, so I went to another commercial district reputed to have hostels. I didn’t bother with an online reservation through www.hostels.com, that portal of lies. I found one in Causeway Bay and barged in at 10pm. “Are there rooms available?” I asked.
“Single?” the manager said, barely looking up.
I thought of my pocketbook. This place looked clean, and relatively more legit. It didn’t smell like athlete’s foot. Their dorms couldn’t possibly be worse than the one I had just come from.
“Do you have any more budget accommodations...?”
“No tonight just single, 300 dollars and 100 for key deposit.”
I was too tired to argue and forked over the cash. HK$400, or approx US$53.
The guy took my money and promptly shoved it in his own wallet. Like a pimp.
So…still not legit.

But the room was the best room I have ever slept in. Well, not really…I’ve slummed it, but I’ve also stayed in some pretty fucking nice digs. But compared to what I had just experienced, this was better than anything I could have imagined. A real bed, and it was even a double bed. A private bathroom. A bathroom in which the shower and toilet are actually partitioned.
Some things should be combined for the sake of space efficiency. Some things can be combined without losing their functionality.
Other things cannot.
