my new digs, part 1

I moved in at night. I met one of my new flat-mates. He is a Filipino driver and his name is Leo. He was lying in bed watching a movie with his bedroom door ajar as I came in lugging my suitcase.

"What movie are you watching?" I asked to make conversation.

"The Fifth Element," Leo replied.

That fact alone made me hold him in much higher esteem than any of my previous flat-mates.

That fact alone assured me that he was an upgrade over Kiwi and Pillsbury.

Leo is an easy-going, friendly guy but not excessively friendly. In other words, he was the perfect flat-mate. Over the next few days I also met another flat-mate, also Filipino, a woman named Chris. She worked much longer hours than I did. But she was very nice and gave me things, like soap, toilet paper, and a small TV.

The other advantage of living with domestic helpers is that the premises are kept pretty clean.

My hours in the apartment overlapped the most with Leo's, so I got to know him better.
Leo is a simple man. Not simple as in retarded, but simple as in noble and pure. I think he is the epitome of Jeffersonian virtue.

I found out he has a wife and two kids back in the Philippines. He misses his kids and wants to see them again soon. He has some small toys and family photos on his wall. I thought my room was small, but his room is half the size of mine, only wide enough for a twin-sized bed and a fan.

Keep on rockin' in the free world, Leo.
